High School Students and Scholarships

by admin on December 21, 2011

A high school student usually spends the first semester of their senior year applying for colleges. College is what they have been preparing for their entire educational career. Doing well in college is something that we have come to expect as a means by which to do well in life. Therefore, it stands to reason that putting the hard work and getting accepted into a superior college or university should result in a chance for a substantially better life.

Unfortunately, this is not always so. Many a time, getting accepted into the university is not the most difficult part of the process. With the proper application of efforts, the dreams are not that farfetched. However there can be realistic constraints that make this neigh unachievable, the most common of these being money. Four years at an elite university such as Princeton or Harvard will end up costing around $160,000. While hearing such astronomical prices for these universities isn’t exactly surprising, the truth is not that much different. According to bankrate.com, about 48% of families said that they couldn’t afford to send their child to college.

The situation is far from hopeless though, in today’s day and age, families have several options in regards to being able to afford college. The most common one is a student loan. Doing this solves most of the problem of being able to afford college. However, it creates problems of its own. Paying back students loans seems to be one of the most dreaded things about graduating college and getting a job. The second, most efficient option would be scholarships.

Scholarships for high school seniors are one of the biggest deciding factors in college acceptances. Whether or not somebody attends the college they’ve been hoping for can be determined simply by whether or not they get scholarships to go there. As a form of college payment that doesn’t require the student to repay any money, it is the most appealing out of all the options. Not only are scholarships risk free on the side of the student, but they are also not school specific. Many times a scholarship can be attained with some extra work, and can be used for any school that the student goes to.

These features of scholarships make them very appealing to the students. They offer additional aid to the students that need it, while not forcing them to take on any debt that could potentially harm them on life. For many, getting a scholarship is one of the only choices that they have in order to make sure their hard work pays off, and they get to attend the college of their dreams.
